Steel 4140 is a low-alloy chromium-molybdenum steel with excellent strength, toughness, and wear resistance. It offers higher hardenability than 4130 and is widely used in heavy-duty industrial and automotive applications. With proper heat treatment, it can achieve high fatigue resistance and dimensional stability.

Introduction to Steel 4140

What
Steel 4140 (AISI 4140) contains about 1% chromium, 0.2–0.4% molybdenum, and 0.4% carbon. This composition provides higher hardenability than 4130, allowing it to reach greater hardness and strength after quenching and tempering. It is tougher than tool steels but stronger than carbon steels, making it a “workhorse” alloy for shafts, gears, and structural components.
