Stainless Steel 420

Material Type:Metal
Material Name:Stainless Steel 420
Alternative Names:UNS S42000 | EN 1.4021 | ASTM A276
Process Compatibility:CNC Milling, CNC Turning, Heat Treatment, Polishing
Description
420 Stainless Steel is a martensitic stainless steel with high carbon content that can be hardened by heat treatment. It offers good hardness, moderate corrosion resistance, and excellent polishability, making it widely used in cutlery, surgical instruments, and tools. Compared with 440C, it has lower carbon content, so it achieves slightly lower hardness but improved toughness.

Introduction to Stainless Steel 420

What
Stainless Steel 420 (UNS S42000) is often called “surgical stainless steel” because of its use in medical tools and cutlery. It contains 12–14% chromium and around 0.15% carbon, allowing it to be hardened to about HRC 50. It has better corrosion resistance than non-stainless tool steels, but less than 304/316. Its polishability makes it ideal for applications requiring a mirror finish. It is magnetic in all conditions.
Advantages
Can be hardened to good strength and wear resistance
Excellent polishability and surface finish capability
Cost-effective compared to 440C or austenitic grades
Good toughness compared to higher-carbon martensitic steels

Applications
Cutlery and kitchen utensils
Surgical and dental instruments
Scissors, razors, and hand tools
Pump shafts and machine parts requiring hardness
