Material Name:Stainless Steel 316L

Alternative Names:UNS S31603 | EN 1.4404 | ASTM A240
Process Compatibility:CNC Milling, CNC Turning, Welding, Forming
Description
316L is the low-carbon version of Stainless Steel 316. With a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, it minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, making it more resistant to intergranular corrosion. It retains the same superior resistance to chlorides and harsh chemicals as 316, while being especially useful for heavy-welded structures in marine and chemical industries.

Introduction to Stainless Steel 316L

What
Stainless Steel 316L (UNS S31603) is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with reduced carbon content compared to 316. The low carbon improves its weldability and resistance to sensitization, especially in thick welded sections where post-weld heat treatment is impractical. It maintains excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chlorides, making it highly reliable for long-term service in aggressive environments such as seawater and chemical plants.
Advantages
Better resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding compared to 316
Excellent chloride corrosion resistance
Good strength, ductility, and formability
Suitable for hygienic and medical-grade applications

Applications
Marine equipment and coastal structures
Chemical and pharmaceutical processing equipment
Medical implants and surgical tools
Storage tanks for aggressive chemicals
